The function of tone is to set the mood or feel for the audience. It can influence them to feel a certain way towards the subject of the piece.....
Examples:
Father: We are going on holiday
Son: That's great!!!!
Tone is set as quite happy and cheerful
Father: We cannot go on holiday
Son: Ok. Great! That is exactly what I expected.
Tone is set as sarcastic in the response
Random person: Can someone tell me what the hell is going on?!?!?!
Tone is very aggressive.
